Fireworks dealers try out online stores

TRICHY: Fireworks manufactures as well as dealers have come up with online stores to avoid the difficulties in setting up a physical shop. The web stores are just like any other e-commerce website, listing all varieties of firecrackers and a detailed description along with the prices. The customers are also finding it easy to shop online, encouraging many firecracker dealers to try their luck during the Diwali season.

Kumaran S, a resident of Anna Nagar in Chennai, got his stock delivered right from the manufacturing facility at Sivakasi. Srinivasan, an NRI working in Saudi Arabia, has sent firecrackers to his home in Manamadurai by online shopping. On the net, the fireworks dealers usually take orders that are above a certain amount, mostly Rs 3,000. 

Sampath R, the regional manager of Standard Fireworks at Sivakasi, said the dealers are finding the online venture more profitable as they get a huge discount after buying in bulk from manufacturers. Besides, they save cost on setting up a brick-and-mortar shop and adhering to safety norms that go with it. The online dealers pass on these benefits to the consumers.

The online store of Peacock Crackers is a hit among the consumers as most of its deliveries go outside the state. The e-commerce website, which was set up in 2009, claims to be the first online firecrackers store in India. "Small traders who try to set up shops in distant villages use the facility. The entire website has been authenticated by the agencies which check for secure online payment. The stocks are delivered mostly in a week's time. People who want to gift fireworks to their friends and relatives also use the online mode," said Senthil Kumar, the manager and CEO of Peacock Crackers.

The retailer either uses its own transporting facility or a private courier for delivering to distant places. With no middlemen, a 20% rebate is offered to every customer, claimed Kumar. Kumar's success has prompted other fireworks manufacturers also to follow suit. They include Anil, Victory and Sri Krishna, said Sampath.

While the family package will have a lot of firecrackers that burst with a loud bang such as ‘rockets’ and ‘olappadakkams’, the children’s ones will have sparklers, ‘chakras’, ‘pistols will roll cap’ and other more playful items.

“We also customise bulk orders. All the padakkams are sourced from Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu,” says Sharath S.M. of Epoch Markers event management, who is now running the show. And true to its name, the e-firm will also be retailing malapadakkams (literally, string of padakkams). “Malappadakams are our speciality. We have strings with 100 padakkams and also with 10,000 padakkams!” adds Sharath.
